Though Harlem’s population and demographics have evolved over the past two decades, the percentage of Central Harlem residents living at a sub-poverty level is still consistently higher than that of the rest of New York City. Residents of Central Harlem complete fewer years of education than those of Manhattan and greater New York City. They also have the highest death rates due to poor health, as well as the highest rates of heart disease, obesity, and diabetes in the city. Central Harlem has a higher percentage of residents, ages 0-17, compared to Manhattan and New York City overall. These statistics shed light on the need to provide programs and resources to better serve the Central Harlem community, particularly the youth and young adults. Harlem Hands Foundation, Inc. has taken on that charge.

As Harlem natives and residents, the Harlem Hands Foundation, Inc. founding members are committed to giving back to the community that raised them. They are dedicated to addressing the needs of the Harlem community and will help foster hope and opportunities for today’s children of Harlem.
